Fires in Spain
Large areas of the countryside in Spain were affected by forest fires during the hot summer of 2009 were some 84,000 hectares have been damaged by wildfire. Some 8,000 hectares (nearly 20,000 acres) have burned in Aragon, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,600 people. A dozen other fires in the region had been brought under control. Aircraft, including planes and helicopters, were being used in Aragon and Catalonia to battle the fires, along with hundreds of firefighters in the hilly terrain, much of it with difficult access. |
Fires in Portugal
Nearly 3,000 of fire-fighters, soldiers and police backed by water-dropping helicopters and planes battled the country's worst forest wildfires in decades across Portugal as strong winds hampered their task, reigniting some blazes that had been under control. So far this year, fires have killed at least 13 people and destroyed an estimated 134,500 hectares (337,000 acres) of forest, far above a yearly average of 110,000 hectares. Of the 18 districts in Portugal, 16 were on "very high" fire alert. About 95 people have been arrested by police in Portugal this year and face arson charges
