About The Project

ACRONYM: PRoMPt
TITLE OF THE PROJECT: Proactive Human Response to Wildfires Outbreak: Measure and Prepare for it
TYPE OF INTERVENTION: Regional Initiative Project
PRIORITY: 2. Environment and Risk Prevention
SUB-THEME: Natural and Technological Risks (including climate change)
DURATION: October 2008 - December 2011 (39 months)
TOTAL BUDGET: 1.387.717,37 €

The objective of the project is to exchange experiences and good practices so as the regional policies for the confrontation of wildfires immediately after their outbreak in very sensitive areas, like the forests’ ones, to be improved. Since the regional policies from the viewpoint of protection of the environment and prevention of danger constitute a question of utmost importance for the integration of the Gothenburg’s Strategy, local and regional authorities in EU need to further work  towards a narrower and more effective collaboration in such issues.

This project, based on previous related activities that are turned in the management of danger, intends to go a step further and deal with the exchange of experiences and good practices on the methods, the action plans or even the tools, by examining the danger and the management of crisis after the outbreak of a devastating fire. Consequently, the entire work is going to be analyzed from the view of readiness to act promptly and effectively so as to avoid as much as possible enormous human, animal and agricultural losses, as well as forestal destructions.

To this prospect, a booklet entitled "Wildfires’ Survival Guide for all" will be published facing questions, such as, correct, focused (or personalised) and on time information and preparation of the population to confront with the outbreak of a fire. Well-structured educational programs and periods of exercise for effective evacuation of areas with the view to avoiding as much as possible human and animal losses as well as strategic exercises of reaction in emergencies aiming at the fast re-establishment of affected regions will be developed.

A handbook named “Wildfires’ Response: Best Cases Study Collection” and the conclusions from the “Benchmarking on Readiness and Effectiveness Indicators” will take the form of official policy documents to become the common base for the future adoption and application of such practices. Moreover, the above results could also be proved useful in other similar regions of EU and be used as a “reference” document “report” for the improvement of the agreed policies on the aforementioned issues inside EU. To the benefit of the validation of the handbook “Wildfires’ Response: Best Cases Study Collection” as well as the simulations and planning of emergencies that will be shaped, exercises in selected areas inside the wooded parts of the partners’ grounds will be organised.

A successful procedure for the wide dissemination of the projects’ results will be followed. To this end, the organisation of the final conference of the project in the historical area of Ancient Olympia, which suffered deeply from devastating fires some years ago, will act as a Pan European Meeting for policies of improvement on the proactive human reaction in the outbreak of devastating fires.

A DVD with comprehensible content, info-corners in focal points of partners’ areas and the creation of an informative website, which will act as a basic source of knowledge with regard to the sensitization and the response in emergencies for the population, will guarantee the sustainability of the results.
